The History of Scouting in Uganda
Scouting started in Uganda in the year 1915 at Mbarara High School under the influence of Rev.Canon Grace
Later on, Ham Mukasa and Noah Mbaguta, the katikikiro's (Prime Minister) of Buganda and Ankole respectively at the time pleaded for the expansion of Scouting in Uganda.
Scouting spread to other schools like Mengo Senior School and king's College Buddo.
Baden Powell ( the founder of the Scout Movement) visited Uganda in 1939 and attended a camp at Buddo.
He also laid a foundation Stone for Uganda Boy Scout Headquarters ( as it was then known) at Wandegeya, on Buganda road, an address which still hosts the headquaters of the Uganda Scout Association.
Scouting then spread steadily and widely and many got interested in the movement, including Ssekabaka Daudi Chwa ( A king of Buganda Kingdom) who donated land to the Boy Scout of Uganda as it was known then at Kaazi to be the training ground for Scouts.
Ssekabaka Edward Mutesa II became a Scout and attended a training course at His palace with some of his subjects. He promoted Scouting and used to put on a Scout uniform at some functions.
Scouting to date has been blessed and promoted by Heads of State, Cultural leaders, corporations ,Business persons, Educationists, religious leaders just to mention a few.
